Dunkeld and Birnam from Birnam Hill

The recorded history of Dunkeld dates back to around 730 AD when the Culdee monks first built a settlement on the banks of the Tay at Dunkeld. However, given that this is one of the few points where the river Tay can be forded, its likely that there was a settlement here for many hundreds of years prior to that.
Unfortunately, practically the whole village was destroyed during the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689 when only 3 houses and the Cathedral were left standing.

Dunkeld Cathedral

The pretty village that you see now, with it’s whitewashed houses and shops has been rebuilt since then. Some of the oldest buildings are in Cathedral Street and around the Cross, and during the 1950s and 60s the National Trust and the local authority restored and modernised practically the whole area. As you wander round, You’ll find a great choice of shops, art galleries, pubs and restaurants.
